Ethics Statement

The Flavor Chase paid for this flower. Though we are in contact and do have a good relationship with Thomas Swanson of High Alpine Genetics, the contents of this review are my own thoughts and HAG wasn’t allowed to preview or have any influence on this review prior to release. Thomas has personally told me that he is cultivating to compete with the best of the best in the CBD market. That being said, let’s get into the review.

Appearance

I’ve seen quite a few phenotypes of the OZ Kush F2 as of late. This version released by HAG is quite unique. It isn’t as beefy of a flower that I’ve seen elsewhere, but it still has a unique density to it. There’s a mixture of phenotypes in the jar. The CBD dominant phenos appear heavily covered in trichomes. The tips of some of these flowers nearly appear covered in isolate. I almost feel bad breaking it down 😂. However, there are also what appear to be some CBG dominant phenos in this jar as well, which are a bit looser and more lanky appearing, with very little density. The CBD phenotypes are definitely the prettier of the two phenos in the jar, but Thomas does have some more dense flowers in the flower menu. This OZK flower is sticky and the cure is excellent. There’s no squishines to it at all. Buds snap and leave a greasy feeling on the fingers. On the inside, you see even more trichome coverage. It’s my opinion that this one would be perfect for pressing rosin.

Nose

The CBD phenotypes in the jar have a rather bold nose. It isn’t the bold gassy nose that I’ve experienced with the OZK from Five Leaf Wellness, but more of a savory, borderline food smell. Like a seasoned, cooked meat with sauce. I’ve had some different OZK F2 phenos that have smelled like this before. While I can say this nose is consistent, I can’t say that it’s my favorite. However, it’s still good. When you pop the jar open the terpenes just jumps out at you. It’s most certainly some louder CBD flower and if you enjoy the terpene profile, you’ll have a good time.

The Smoking Experience (Taste and Effect)

I rolled approximately 1 – 1.5 grams in a RAW Black Organic hemp paper. As mentioned earlier, the cure on this flower is excellent. The stickiness makes rolling easy as it holds together and takes shape. Once rolled up the dry hit, like the nose, is a mixture of sweet-savory and reminiscent of a steak sauce.

Once lit, I was treated to a pleasantly smooth smoke. There was little to no harshness from inhale to exhale throughout the entire smoke session. The savory profile of the nose translates well and can be tasted throughout nearly the entire duration of the j. Out of the different phenotypes that I’ve tried of the OZK F2, so far, this is without a doubt the best one that I’ve smoked.

At about 1/2 to 1/3 of the joint left, effects begin to set in. Physically, there’s a slight pressure in the head and my eyes feel a little bit heavier. However, the feeling soon dissipates into a more clear headed, sativa leaning feeling. There’s a bit of a relaxing physical body buzz, but most of the effect is concentrated up top in the face and head. My thoughts began to trail off into various things I need to get done for the day. This one felt like an anytime sort of smoke. Right now it’s the morning and I feel more enthusiastic about getting things done. However, had it been the evening, I could easily see this being a relaxing flower to use for sleep. That middle of the road hybrid.

Final Thoughts and Shelf Placement

OZ Kush is a hemp strain that has made waves in the hemp flower community. Initially gaining popularity after the F1 indoor varieties released by Five Leaf Wellness (#38, Garlic Cut, Platinum Cut), it quickly earned the title of the best CBD strain publicly available at the time. Since then, more CBD strains arrived to the market to give it competition. The F2 variety that I’ve tried has consistently been unique from its F1 parents. I’ve yet to try a gassy or garlic phenotype of the F2. I’ve had more dessert and savory leaning flowers pretty much every time.

All that being said, High Alpine Genetics has one of the best versions of this strain. While not the most dense and full appearance, its nose and flavor profile are bolder than some of the competition and its effects are quite pleasant. I would just prefer a more gassy flavor similar to the F1 parent. I hope that one day Five Leaf Wellness gives Thomas some cuttings of their OZK Platinum Cut to make crossings with. OZK PC X Pink Panther, Pink Pineapple or Legendary OG would be a major hit.
